Created for VEA Newport Beach, A Marriott Resort & Spa, Electric Sun Gaze is a site-specific mixed-media animation that transforms the resort’s coastal energy into a playful surrealist portrait. The work was commissioned for VEA’s curated art collection and installed at the property’s Grand Staircase.

A Moment Through Elan’s Eyes
At the center of the commission is Elan, VEA’s fictional muse and embodiment of the resort’s joyful, worldly personality. Sadie reimagined her as a vivid contemporary figure framed by the architecture, palms and poolside atmosphere of Newport Beach.
As Elan lifts her golden sunglasses, the perspective changes. The animation reveals what she sees: the Ferris wheel at the Newport Fun Zone, viewed from near the VEA pool. A simple gesture becomes a passage into a sunlit memory of place.

Portraiture Set in Motion
Electric Sun Gaze brings together portraiture, graphic linework, saturated color and animation. The composition moves between the intimacy of Elan’s expression and the visual language of the resort around her, allowing the story to unfold over time rather than in a single fixed view.
The golden frames become the work’s visual hinge: part fashion detail, part cinematic device, and the point where viewer, muse and Newport Beach meet.
Art Made for Place
Installed at VEA’s Grand Staircase, the commission was conceived for a specific architecture and audience. It connects the interior art experience to the landscape beyond the hotel—its pool, palms, coastal light and the familiar amusement imagery of Newport Beach.
The result is both artwork and encounter: a locally rooted piece that gives guests a playful pause as they move through the resort.
